The Heritage on Wheels, the luxury train that links Rajasthan's rich heritage sites, is drawing more and more tourists, thanks to effective publicity in the country and abroad. Launched in February, the three nights and four days tour aboard the train begins from Jaipur and covers Bikaner, Haat, Gajner, Tal Chhapar, Ramgarh, Nawalgarh and Mandawa before returning to the Rajasthan capital.

Rajasthan Tourism Development Corp (RTDC) has been using various campaigns to promote the train. This includes a 15-minute advertisement film, which shows the interiors of the train along with its journey to various destinations. The metre-gauge train, run jointly by RTDC and Indian Railways, is now carrying 35-40 tourists on a single trip.

Single occupancy on the train for three nights comes in for $900, double occupancy per person for $600 while triple occupancy per person comes for $450.

The RTDC has now decided to hire marketing agents in other states of the country for which big tour operators and travel agents have been contacted.

Liposuction, nose reshaping, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery and tummy tuck are the most common procedures for which these foreigners come here, she notes.

The procedures generally cost one-fifth of what they do in the United States, says Dr Ajay Kashyap, a cosmetic surgeon with Apollo Hospital, who has since last October done nearly 100 such procedures.

Tea tourism is high on the West Bengal governments radar. It intends to upgrade accommodation, construct log-cabins, renovate heritage bungalows and undertake landscaping to give a boost to this sector. While the state is seeking funds from the central government state tourism minister Manab Mukherjee has asked Ambika Soni for Rs 8 crore for a tea tourism package it has received a host of proposals from the tea-estate owners, says Mukherjee.

Some tea-estate owners have already got tea tourism off ground. Among these are Rajah Banerjee of Makaibari Tea Estate, the Chamarias of Phaskowa and Anshuman Prakash of Glenburn Tea Estate. Glenburn, which was opened to tourists around three years ago, is a exclusive boutique hotel where guests put up at the Burra Bungalow, or the Glenburn Lodge on the banks of the Rangit. At Rs 8,000-10,000 per person per night, it is very high-end, and as much as 80 per cent of the clientele comprises foreigners. In Dibrugarh, Assam, the owners of Mancotta Tea Estate have taken a similar initiative to open up the heritage chang bungalow to visitors.

Tea-tourism at Makaibari, an initiative thats about a year old, is of a different kind. Visitors here have the choice to stay at the heritage Stone Lodge where the four suites have separate toilets and running hot-water, or they can stay in any of the 20-25 houses of tea-garden workers where they can be close to nature and the community.

Says Abhra Bhattacharjee of Help Tourism, which has been working with Banerjee to initiate tourism on Makaibari Tea Estate, The objective is to encourage tourism while also ensuring that the benefits reach the communities directly affected. According to Chambling, Sikkim has huge potential for tourism development, given its scenic natural environs, but he cautions that this is only feasible if the state's resources are tapped well. Sikkim is one of the few Indian states boasting of eco tourism, and the Central Government and other agencies are helping it to realize this potential. "With the support of the Central Government, Sikkim will be the number one destination in our country. We are trying our best to develop our state as the best tourist destination in the country," said Chambling. The state government is also seeking the help of domestic and foreign investors. "We are seeking investment from India and abroad for the tourism and hydropower sectors, besides other potential sectors. Our main advantage is natural resources and we want to exploit these resources," said Chambling. Potential also exists for developing Sikkim as the floriculture capital of the country. What is required is a judicious planning, communication and adequate Central Government support. "Our main problem is airport and railways and we are hopeful that within three years we will have our own airport," said Chambling. The state's rich cultural tradition, its dance forms and unique lifestyles are also avenues for revenue generation. Sikkim can be called as the best example of a composite culture. Jammu and Kashmir is to develop new tourism destinations in the state with world-class facilities to attract the high-end tourist, an official said Thursday. At least four such destinations, two each in the Kashmir Valley and in Jammu region, will be developed to promote "high earning leisure tourism in the state", the official told media persons here.

Deputy Chief Minister told tourism officials at a meeting that there was a need to develop new tourist resorts in the state as "most of the existing tourist infrastructure does not carry any fresh appeal and does not match the facilities available in the present day tourism market."

Similar resorts are also planned at Dudpathri, Bootapathri and Bungus Valley in Kashmir. The process for engaging the consultancy firms would be completed by the end of March, so that the development of the resorts is taken up at the earliest.

'Heritage On Wheels' train launched in Rajasthan

The inaugural run of the "Heritage On Wheels" train - a joint venture of Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and Indian Railways - began here on Friday. This is the second luxury tourist train in the state after the "Palace On Wheels" launched earlier by RTDC and Indian Railways in Jan 26, 1982. The itinerary of the Heritage On Wheels has been planned in such a manner that tourists have an experience of the Shekhawati region - Bikaner-Nawalgarh-Ramgarh-Mandawa including Gajner and Tal Chhapar animal sanctuaries, said Vinod Zutshi, Rajasthan's tourism secretary.

Tourists will get to see several manors and forts and experience the unique culture of the region. Heritage On Wheels will run every Tuesday and Friday at 7.30 p.m. from Jaipur and reach Bikaner the next day at 6 a.m. At Bikaner, the tourists will be taken for sightseeing in coaches. From Bikaner, the train will proceed to Shekhawati, where there will be another sightseeing tour of surrounding areas.

The train has nine salons with heritage decor and 72 berths, but the first run Friday had only 18 passengers on board. Each salon has a capacity to accommodate eight guests in four bedrooms. The train's two restaurants - Maharaja and Maharani - have a bar and kitchen, and the train is targeted at the middle-income group with the fare being 40 percent less than that of the Palace On Wheels.

Fares for Heritage On Wheels will be Rs.12,500 a day for single occupant, Rs.8,500 each for double occupancy and Rs.6,500 each for triple occupancy.

Jaipur to get India's International Airport

Jaipur will get the India's 14th international airport with the central government on Thursday approving a move to upgrade the status of the airfield.

"Jaipur is to be an international airport. This will offer improved connectivity and wider choice of services to air travellers, boosting both international tourism and economic development of the region," Finance Minister P. Chidambaram announced after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The cabinet nod came after the Rajasthan government contended that the number of foreign tourists to the state had been steadily rising and that direct international flights to state capital Jaipur would further boost arrivals. There has been a "substantial increase" in the number of tourists and this warranted direct international flights to Jaipur, the state government said.

The cabinet noted that Jaipur airport's existing 9,000-foot runway could accommodate medium capacity long-range or equivalent aircraft and the necessary lighting, instrument landing systems and night flying capabilities were already in place. This apart, facilities for customs, health and immigration checks also were in place, the cabinet noted.

Jaipur to get ropeway to boost tourism

The Rajasthan government has selected a private firm to build a ropeway connecting this state capital to two forts on its outskirts as part of a programme to boost tourism.

Kolkata-based Damodar Ropeways, which has executed ropeway and bridge projects across the country, will build the Rs.140 million ropeway to connect Kanak-Vrindavan in Jaipur to Jaigarh and Nahargarh, two of three hilltop forts that overlook the city. Work on the state's first state-of-the-art ropeway is slated to start in January. It will be about 650 feet in height and it will take 10 minutes for a cab to reach the top of the ropeway. From there, a bus will ferry passengers to Nahargarh and Jaigarh forts. Land for the project has been leased to Damodar Ropeways for 30 years.

India's first women taxi service launched

India's first taxi service managed and operated by women and exclusively for women tourists, was flagged off at the international airport here Friday. The 24-hour service "Priyadarshini", with a fleet of nine taxis decorated with the logo of tourism ministry's campaign 'Incredible India', has been stationed at the Indira Gandhi International airport. The women working with "Priyadarshini" have been trained in driving tourist taxis, self-defence, imparted English language skill and knowledge of the country's history to make tourists more comfortable, the minister said. These trained persons can act as cab service providers, tourist guides and present the new face of Incredible India, Choudhury said.

The all-women taxi service would soon be extended to Mumbai and Hyderabad. There would be two women drivers in each taxi.

The Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) will, in collaboration with Indian Railways, start this new train "Heritage on Wheels" to tackle the rising number of tourists in the state, official sources told IANS.

The new train, starting from Jaipur and ending at Bikaner, will cover Navalgarh, Churu and other Shekhawati destinations in northeast Rajasthan on the way. This will be the second heritage train in Rajasthan after Palace on Wheels. A train with historic charm and modern conveniences, Palace on Wheels takes tourists on a royal odyssey, bringing alive the luxury of princely travel through this desert state.

Beginning its week-long journey from the Delhi cantonment, the train covers Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur and Agra before returning to Delhi.

This new heritage train with 14 coaches would be air- conditioned and have a capacity of 100 passengers.

Rajasthan to introduce adventure tourism

How about para-sailing over the Aravalli ranges or viewing Udaipur from a hot air balloon? These are some of the exciting features of adventure tourism Rajasthan is set to offer to lure holidaymakers.

"Adventure tourism has admirers across the world. Utilising the suitable geographical features in the state, we would soon start adventure tourism in different parts of Rajasthan," a senior official from the tourism department said here.

He said that the lake city of Udaipur had been identified for the project because it not only fulfilled all necessary geographical requirements but was also a major tourist destination.

Sightseeing in hot air balloons, para-sailing, mountaineering and trekking over the Aravali ranges would be some of the attractions.

"We will start this project from Udaipur. After judging the response we will follow it up in Jaipur, Kota and other places," the official added.

He said Rajasthan had been conducting a four-month publicity campaign around the world to lure more tourists.

ndia seems to be enjoying a tourism boom like never before. This is evident from the overbooked flights and hotels this winter, with the number of international tourists expected to touch 3.5 million and foreign exchange earnings to surpass $5 billion this fiscal.

The winter of abundance has already started bringing in international tourists waiting to explore India. Going by the occupancy rates at hotels and the rush for flights, foreign exchange earning this year is expected to be $200 million more than last year's $4.8 billion.

'Medical tourism boom in India'

ndia has become a major medical tourism destination for people worldwide with the country offering reasonably cheap but sophisticated healthcare services, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said Wednesday.

"We are getting people in thousands from various parts of the world with most of them coming for bypass surgeries, dental and orthopaedic treatment, and even for plastic surgeries," Ramadoss told IANS here.

The Indian government would soon identify a number of multi-specialty hospitals and expert doctors to cater to the increasing flow of overseas patients.

"The task of identifying hospitals and specialist doctors would be entrusted to a new body called the Accreditation Foundation of India," the minister said.

"The foundation would be of immense help to foreign patients to get treatment as per their needs," he added.

The decision to set up the foundation was taken after India witnessed a rush of patients from the US, Britain, Africa, and the Middle East countries seeking advanced healthcare facilities.

"The cost of a bypass surgery in India would be just about one-sixth of the expenses if the same was done in the UK or other countries," "Bypass surgeries apart, hip and knee replacements are fields where we are getting lot of European patients," Ramadoss said.

In a novel tourist attraction, the 150-year-old steam engine, Fairy Queen, will roll out Saturday for a round trip from this national capital to Alwar in Rajasthan.

Fairy Queen, the oldest working engine in the world, will journey every second and fourth Saturday from Delhi Cantonment station to Alwar till February 2006, a railway ministry statement said Friday. The locomotive, which has its name entered in the Guinness Book of Record, will have specially designed coaches to provide a comfortable ride to its travellers.

"The coaches have been specially designed for comfort of the tourists and the services include on-board catering, guides, piped music and magazines. Ford scion plans top ski resort in India

Fascination with India and the Himalayas will soon see the great grandson of automobile legend Henry Ford giving shape to a luxury ski resort in the pristine surroundings of Kullu in Himachal Pradesh.

In the capital after signing the memorandum of understanding between the Himachal Pradesh government and the Himalayan Ski Village (HSV) company, Alfred Brush Ford expressed optimism that the $500-million project would be up and running in three years.

"We hope to have all the permissions by yearend and will be opening within three years," Ford said.

The ski village spread over 50 acres and surrounded by forests at an altitude of 9,200 feet above sea level will have 700 five-star hotel rooms and 300 villas, to be built in phases.

The 10-day 36th International Film Festival of India, scheduled for kick-off in Panaji, Goa, on November 24, promises a cinematic feast to whet the appetite of film lovers - a wide range of entries representing the old and the new, the experimental and the mainstream, and the classic and the fresh off the oven.

In other words, IFFI Goa 2005, despite having taken its own sweet time to get into its groove for reasons political and administrative, might not turn out to be as big a washout as some sceptics had feared.

The hinge is on the quality of films that the 36th IFFI manages to attract for its centrepiece Cinema of the World section and the Asian/African/Latin American Competition. As things stand, 50-odd films from 35 countries will constitute the Cinema of the World section. Other sections of the festival are expected to screen about 150 more films.

Indian Panorama will, as has already been widely reported, showcase 21 feature films and 15 non-features.

The composition of a five-member jury for the Competition section has already been finalised. Celebrated 63-year-old Chilean filmmaker Miguel Littin, last seen at IFFI in the late 1990s, will head the panel. The other members of the jury are French director Alain Corneau, Indian filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza, Iranian actor Faramarz Gharibian and Austrian director Sabine Derflinger.

Tourists can once again enjoy elephant rides at the Amber Fort in this Rajasthan capital with the government lifting a ban that was imposed after a rogue elephant killed one person and injured two tourists.
The decision to lift the ban was taken at a meeting of senior officials here Monday. It was decided that 61 elephants, who were found to be in sound mental and physical health, would be allowed to ferry tourists to the fort.

According to sources, the decision was taken after a committee of elephant owners agreed to follow safety norms issued by the state government. The tourism department had imposed an indefinite ban on elephant rides after a rogue elephant trampled to death a tour escort and injured two Belgian tourists Sep 15.

The Amber Fort is one of the favourite tourist spots in the city. Some tourists, especially foreigners, prefer taking an elephant ride to the fort perched high on a barren ridge.

India voted one of the two sexiest nations

India, the land of Kama Sutra, has been voted as one of the two sexiest nations in the world. The other nation with the most sex appeal is Brazil.

In a new global survey conducted through ThisIsTheLife.com, over 3,000 people gave their opinion on issues related to dating, romance and sex appeal in the modern world.

The survey that was run in conjunction with Chivas Regal 12 Scotch Whisky also delivered the result that India is considered the second sexiest nation in the world - only 0.2 per cent behind festive Brazil.

Traditional romance is still hot on the agenda for most couples around the world with 42 percent ideally aiming for their own slice of paradise with sunsets and moonlit strolls.

But the survey reveals an increasingly strong interest to spend "couple time" more actively: Nearly one third of those surveyed (30 per cent) would prefer to spend a weekend involving more active outdoor activities.

Top mountain bikers will pedal their way through the steep and winding hill roads of Himachal Pradesh when they take part in the state's first international biking rally starting Thursday.

"The first Hercules MTB (mountain biking) rally will be flagged off from Shimla early Thursday and, after covering a distance of nearly 500 km, will end eight days later in the resort town of Manali," said Mohit Sood, president of the Himalayan Adventure Sports & Tourism Promotion Association (HASTPA).

Hercules MTB Himachal 2005 is being organised by HASTPA in association with the state department of tourism and civil aviation. Chennai based cycle manufacturer Hercules Cycles is sponsoring the meet.

Besides Indian participants, several bikers from Europe, North America and other Asian countries are also taking part.

The submarine would operate to a maximum depth of 300 feet with 24 passengers and two crew members. External lighting, VHF, through water communications, underwater video and obstacle avoidance sonar systems would fitted on the vessel, Sateesh said.

Each passenger would have to pay between Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 for a three hour ride in the submarine, which would include to and fro journey towards the craft.

Car rallies, golf, paragliding and a marathon - such events are set to spice up the scenic hill state this autumn in an exercise to bring more visitors. These events, organised by the Himachal Pradesh tourism department, will soon kick off for three weeks, said top state government officials "The festivities start Sep 25, with the Great Himalayan Run (marathon), the first of its kind here," said state Tourism minister G.S. Bali here.

"This time, the weeklong international Raid-de-Himalaya will go up to Srinagar instead of Leh. The motor rally will be flagged off from Shimla Sep 30," he said. This will be followed by the mountain biking event from Shimla to Manali for another week. A three-day Vintage & Classic rally will simultaneously take place from Delhi to Shimla.

Bali said a centenary gold tournament would take place at the scenic Naldehra golf course on the outskirts of this resort town. "The festivities will wind up with a pre-world cup paragliding tournament at Bir and Billing in the beautiful Kangra valley," he disclosed.

According to him, the state tourism department would shortly invite bids for a Tourist Helicopter Service to attract high-end tourists to the remote mountainous tribal valley.

The picturesque Dal Lake in Srinagar may sparkle once again with the government approving a Rs.2.99 billion ($68 million) conservation and management plan to rid its waters of pollutants

"The conservation plan will not only improve the water quality of Dal-Nagin lake but also stop any further shrinkage of the water body," an official spokesperson told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.

The entire cost of the project, under the national lakes conservation plan, will be borne by the central government to beautify the lake that is not only a major tourist attraction, but a major source of income for the people, she said. The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, has directed that the project be completed by 2010, she added.

The spokesperson said the ministry of environment and forests has identified nine other lakes for similar conservation programmes. These are: Sukhna in Chandigarh, the lake at Nainital in Uttaranchal, Kodaikanal and Ooty in Tamil Nadu, the lake at Udaipur in Rajasthan, Rabindra Sarovar in West Bengal, Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad, Powai in Mumbai, and Sagar in Madhya Pradesh.

Billed as the only show of its kind in Asia, the three-day and the fourth edition of the India International Boat Show (IIBS) opened here Friday with an eye on the growing cruise market in this country. IIBS is the only show in the region that provides unlimited opportunities for exhibitors from India, Southeast Asia, Middle East, Europe, Australia and the United States to tap the growing Indian leisure boating and marine equipment market.

Seventy-five exhibitors from across the globe have set up stalls and include giants like Volvo, Fun Seeker and Carver from the US, Ferretti from Italy and Gulf Craft from the UAE.

I feel authorities should now begin zoning of the waters of the state," said Jose Domini, a tourism expert. He suggested that Kerala waters should be segmented into backwaters, canals and the sea.

"Backwaters is unique because of its tranquillity and buyers should see this in perspective when they visit the stalls at the boat show. What should run in the sea should not be allowed to operate in the backwaters and canals," added Dominic, who is keen to buy marine equipment for his properties.

It's now the turn of Indian villages to find a place in the country's tourism map -- the government aims to promote the industry by taking it to the rural areas.

The ministry of tourism, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will promote 31 rural locations under the Endogenous Tourism Project/Rural Tourism Scheme. The initiative aims to enable local communities introduce visitors to their art and craft, cultural and natural heritage.

"Mahatma Gandhi once said that India lives in her villages. Now we invite the world to our villages. We want people to see how we live," said Renuka Chowdhury, the minister of state for tourism told a World Tourism Day event here Tuesday.

"We have brought in the concept of rural tourism with the ideals of ancient Indian tradition of 'gurukul'. Visitors will be encouraged to go to villages and learn different traditional arts including dance, music, pottery and painting from the masters. After the end of their stay, they will also be awarded certificates," said the minister.

Bastar is a vast tribal region in the recently formed state of Chhattisgarh. It is a relatively lesser-known destination. After a day's train journey through the hills, ravines and vast flat lands of central India, you arrive at Raipur, the state capital. From here on, the six hour drive to Jagdalpur in the district of Bastar is a very pleasant experience. In addition to taxis, a regular bus service plies the route.

Until recently Bastar was the largest district in the country. Parts of it are dense jungle, whilst other areas within it are still very remote. Bastar is also inhabited by several tribes, many of whom still live in relative isolation from the modern world. In fact, many of these tribes have been the subjects of anthropological study for decades.

Jagdalpur, being the district headquarters, is quite urbanised but only a few kilometres away you can find a tribal village that seemed almost frozen in time.

Tirathgarh Falls : The falls are an hours drive from the town of Jagdalpur. A stretch of the journey goes through dense forest. The waterfall appears quite suddenly and the entire scale becomes clear once you get closer to the edge, and that can be a bit tricky. The falls are almost 100 feet high and present all their glory immediately after the monsoon. A flight of stairs leads to the base of the falls. Despite the powerful gush, the water falls in delightful steps, making it possible for people to bathe here.

Kailash Gufa : This underground limestone cave with fascinating formations lies within the Kanger National Park. A narrow dirt track leads into dense jungle, and that's surprising considering it is only the periphery of the park. This is genuine wild territory and stories of surprise tiger attacks abound. Kailash Gufa opens to tourists in the first week of November.

Chitrakote Falls : Only 40 kilometres from Jagdalpur, the Indrawati River turns into a turbulent torrent creating a magnificent set of falls called Chitrakote. It is quite simply - overwhelming. The massive falls throw up so much spray that you can clearly see two perfectly formed rainbows extending from the middle of falls. It's almost as if a special effects wizard has worked up some high-tech imagery. A long winding stepway takes you to the base of the Chitrakote falls. It's a sight to behold.

What's in a colour? A Taj Mahal in any shade is still beautiful. Tourists coming to Agra will soon be able to see another Taj - this time in black - on the banks of the Yamuna.

Giving in to his persistent request, the Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday granted world-famous Orissa artiste Sudharshan Patnaik permission to build a Taj Mahal of black sand near Shah Jahan's eternal monument of love.

According to sources, the decision has been taken to add colour to the celebrations being held to commemorate 350 years of the construction of Taj Mahal. The Taj extravaganza is being organised by the state government on completion of celebrations of Taj Mahotsav.

The permission was granted at a special meeting held by government officials. Any threat to the existing Taj Mahal by the proposed monument of sand has been ruled out.

Patnaik will start building his Taj on September 17 and is expected to finish on September 24. It will stand on the Taj Khema lawns for three days where tourists can admire its ephemeral beauty.

Filmmaker Muzzafar Ali, flutist Hari Prasad Chaurasia, actress Jaya Prada and Adnan Sami would also hold performances on the completion of the one-year-long Taj Mahotsav celebrations.

West Bengal taps Colonial heritage for tea tourism

The lush green world famous tea estates at West Bengal's Siliguri district are all set to become a hot tourist spot. The West Bengal Sate Government has inducted a novel concept of "Tea Tourism" to help boost tourism in the state. The state's tourism department has been sanctioned Rs 8 crore by the Centre for expanding and developing the required infrastructure requisite for this plan.

RRP Singh, General Manager, West Bengal Forest Department Corporation, said that work had already started on developing the infrastructure in and around the tea gardens in North Bengal. Singh said that they also had plans to develop Golf courses around the scenic tea gardens.

"The project is related to tea and keeping this in mind, we have brought in the concept of tea tourism. There are a lot of beautiful bungalows in the tea gardens. The scenery is also very picturesque. The villagers have developed the area and now we are all set to launch the concept of tea tourism," said Singh.

Tea, timber and eco-tourism are the mainstay of the state's economy.

MP Purohit, manager of Mana Barrie tea estate, while lauding the new decision said "If infrastructure is developed according to tourism then it will give a boost to the economy and the tea estates as well".

Efforts are also on to rope in the Asian Development Bank and UNESCO for the project.

West Bengal has 183 established tea gardens belonging to British era, besides over 500 tea gardens planted in recent years. The tea industry in West Bengal forms the backbone of the state's economy.

France has Cannes. Italy has Venice. Ger many has Berlin. Canada has Toronto. Korea has Pusan. Each of these cities hosts a respected, coveted, annual film festival that our filmmakers trip over themselves for invitations to.

But in India, the large movie-making hub of the East, the annual film festival has been controversial, nomadic and faltering. That is, until now. Goa has finally been accepted and named as the per manent venue for the annual International Film Festival of India (Iffi).

In 2004, Goa had the opportunity to showcase itself as a potential permanent venue for Iffi. A spanking new multiplex was constructed in time, a promenade was designed and built, and the Goa ministry engaged in a major public relations exercise, tom-tomming its readiness, budget, planning and value as the venue.

Three months before the start of Iffi 2005 comes the announcement that Goa it is -- for better or for worse.

The biggest argument -and many industry insiders say the most logical one -is that all the major film festivals in the world are identified with a city, so why not Iffi?

Goa, say promoters, has the potential, if only sceptics would stop trying to run before they can walk. If only we were not naïve enough to believe that Goa can become a Venice or a Berlin in a year or two. Those are festivals with a long tradition, built over decades. Iffi Goa will have to prove itself. It will have to work hard to establish itself as a serious film centre, worthwhile market and a viable venue vis-à-vis hospitality.

The hope is that, over time, the calibre of films entered will improve, and perhaps Goa stands a better chance of being a purist's film festival precisely because it is not the capital and therefore is unlikely to become a victim of babudom and the pulls and pressures of being located where the film industry does its job.

Over time, and that could mean at least five years, the festival should organically evolve into the mould of Toronto and Berlin -- with a marketplace, exhibition areas and high quality films vying to be in competition at Iffi Goa.

The interiors are just as ornate, with an open portico leading into a main hall, then a vestibule beyond which is an inner sanctum containing the free-standing cult image. In fact, the sculpture and architecture blend so perfectly that each building appears to have been conceived by a single mastermind.

The oldest streets start from the Park as well as J. N. Street, the main shopping artery, which connects into the tamil part of the town which was formerly divided form the French quarters by a now covered canal. Monuments abound in Pondy and each one has a story to tell. The Aayi Mandapam at the centre of the Park is the most well known monument. Built during the reign of Napoleon III in France and named after a 16th. century courtesan, Aayi, who demolished her house and built a watertank instead. This was to appease a passing king who had mistaken her candle-lit home for a holy place. This reservoir served French engineers later to bring water to the town.

Like any other place in India Pondicherry has its own unique festivals with its own colourful ambience, like The International Yoga Festival in January, Maasi Magam in February - March at the beach of the Fishing Village and Fête de Pondichery in August.

Para-sailing revs up Sukhna lake at Chandigarh, Punjab

Announcing a new policy on aquatic sports in the city here Tuesday, the Chandigarh administration said it would soon start para-sailing, water-jet skiing and other water sports at the Sukhna lake.

Sukhna will see water skiing taking place after nearly two decades as the activity was stopped due to environmental concerns about marine life and depleting water level in the lake.

Para sailing is being introduced at the man-made lake for the first time.

The sports activities will start once a multimillion-rupee de-silting project at the lake is completed and a clear waterway of two kilometres is made available for para-sailing without disruption.

The lake - a well-known tourist landmark of this city - was dug by Chandigarh's founder-architect Le Corbusier against the backdrop of the Shivalik range of the Himalayas.

An official spokesman said that besides giving a boost to water sports, the new activities would give people access to more recreational facilities.

Other water sports to be taken up are canoeing, kayaking, yachting and angling.

A speedboat had already been made available for water skiing by expert skiers at Sukhna and 20 kayaks and canoes are being procured with carbon-fibre oars.

After working out the modalities, permits will be issued to anglers to re-start fishing at the lake.

More and more travel agencies are devising yoga packages, saying one out of 10 foreign tourists and corporate visitors come here exclusively for Yoga classes.

The Pink City - Jaipur, capital of Rajasthan, it seems, it becoming the new favourite for those who want to plunge into yoga.

R.S. Rathore, general manager of Hotel Mansingh, told IANS: "Five years ago nobody knew about health or yoga tourism here. Today it has outrun all expectations.

"Apart from tourists, large groups from the corporate sector come just to learn yoga."

Karan Singh of Surya Tours and Travels said: "Gone are the days when the quest for mental peace used to drive people to places like Rishikesh or southern India. Today Jaipur is replacing them all."

Singh says one reason for this is that Jaipur, known as Pink City because of a large number of traditional architecture in pink, forms a golden triangle with two major tourist destinations, Delhi and Agra.

He added that many tour operators here now run seven to 10-day camps at yoga centres. "And we are getting immense response from both corporates as well as foreign tourists."

These centres give preliminary lessons in yoga, and charges are inclusive of vegetarian meals. The Madhavashram Yoga Centre is among the major ones.

An official at a naturopathy centre in Bapu Nagar area of the city said that earlier they used to have just a handful of visitors per month but now groups of 40 to 50 come regularly.

According to statistics, every third foreign tourist coming to India finds his way to Rajasthan, drawn by the exotic beauty of the Thar desert and the state's historical past, resplendent forts and rich architectural heritage. Now they will have the yoga as their latest raison d'etre, tourism officials assert.

A fortnight-long Ladakh festival to attract tourists to this picturesque region will commence from September 1, 2005.

Cultural programmes by various ethnic groups of Ladakh, archery and polo matched, river rafting, rock climbing and double humped camel safari will be the highlights of the event, the Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Satish Nehru, told reporetrs today after a meeting to review the arrangements for the festival.

The meeting decided that a double humped camel expedition will be flagged during the festival, he said adding that French tourists will participate in this camel expedition which will move from Ladakh and march to Rajasthan for participation in famous camel festival at Pushkar.

The meeting lso decided to take up the issue of raising flight frequency to Leh, especially during festival period, with the authorities of Indian Airlines and Jet Airways.

Last year around 35,000 tourists, including 12,000 domestic tourists had visited Leh, he said and added that during the current year as many as 14,670 tourists, including 4,000 domestic tourists, have visited the area despite low flight frequency to Leh this year.

The Deputy Commissioner said that tourists connected agencies have been asked to make atleast 30 per cent rebate in hotel fare and taxi fare during the festival so that more and more tourists come to Leh.

In Rajasthan ,20 miles south of Bikaner, near Nokha, is a small desert town called Deshnok or Deshnoke. Deshnok's best-known feature is a small white marble Hindu temple sacred to Karni Mata, a 14^th-15^th C female mystic and political figure. She is believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Durga, "The Inaccessible" - a striding warrior-woman manifestation of the Divine Mother Devi-Ma.

The Temple looks much like any other Hindu shrine from the outside. But behind the ornate silver doors and white marble carvings at the entryway, thousands of small brown rats run rampant through the temple complex. The rats are the main attraction at the temple. There are thousands of them running freely through the shrine, eating and drinking the sweets and milk provided by pilgrims in their honour. The rats who live there are considered holy because they are believed to be reincarnations of people hiding from the wrath of Yama, the Hindu god of death. And it's thought to be especially good luck to eat and drink from the same bowls as the rodents.

A normal human being will be absolutely scared over the thought, of the number of rats that are in the temple. However, the outstanding fact is that, these rats known as Kabas are harmless and play around in the temple without disturbing the devotees. Rather they sit on devotees' laps, shoulders, hands and head which the devotees think to be of divine spirit and blessings of the Goddess. It is said that just one white rat lived in the temple, and that it is a very special rat. It's also considered lucky to spot that white rat here. If it looked at you it was very good luck, and if you touched it, it was even better.

The magnificence of these Kabas is that, despite being innumerable, they never go out of the temple's boundaries. Moreover, due to the blessings of Karniji they get their food, shelter, lodging and even their life cycle continues inside the temple. The miraculous fact is that no disease relating to rats has ever been found in Deshnoke till date. Neither the temple stinks of foul smells nor it is dirty anywhere. Infact even the offerings like milk, sweets, cereals, fruits, water and coconuts are first offered to the holy Kabas and then distributed among the devotees which is consumed by them as a holy prasad, especially the water that the Kabas drink is considered to be very auspicious.

Usually, rats are considered to be coward as they are scared of human beings, but in Karniji's temple, under her shelter, these Kabas are present all over, rule the temple like kings, roar like lions and roam about everywhere in the temple freely & comfortably.

Valley of Flowers national park gets in world heritage list

The 'Valley of Flowers' -- renowned for its meadows of endemic alpine flowers and outstanding natural beauty -- has been included in the world heritage list as a natural site of international importance by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.

The decision was taken at the World Heritage Committee's meeting in Durban, South Africa, recently.

The Valley of Flowers National Park was included in the World Heritage Site as an extension to the Nanda Devi National Park, popularly known as Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Park, in west Himalayas, a tourism department release said.

This richly diverse area is also home to rare and endangered animals, including the Asiatic black bear, snow leopard, brown bear and blue sheep, it said.

Nanda Devi National Park was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1988, the release added.

India vaults to fifth top travel destination

INDIAN HAS made it to the big league in travel destinations. The Chicago-based iExplore.com, unveiling it top ten destinations during 2004, has placed India at No. 5, a dramatic vault from the 36th slot of year earlier.

iExplore, which is affiliated wit National Geographic and is forbs #1 adventure travel site for the past five years, made the ranking on the basis of the vacation purchases of it travel offer during the past year.

"2004 clearly marked the rebound in exotic, far away destination like India," iExplore founder and CEO George Deeb said. Peru head the top 10 list followed by Egypt and China.

The year saw the elimination of some of the company's traditional top 10 destinations, including Antarctica, Australia, and Nepal. Nepal's relegation to 27th place is attributed to the spike in violence there.

The big gain notwithstanding, few Indian may be flattered by iExplore's mixed introduction of the country to prospective travellers even while arguing why a visit to India is so compelling.

Its promotion begins on a rather ominous note "A trip to India is an all out assault on the senses. You'll be travelling through dusty heat (or snowy clod in the north), sharing roads wit ha parade of bicycle, auto-rickshaws, sputtering motorcycles, tinsel-draped trucks, camel carts and the occasional cow.

"At India's sight and markets, the chaos continues : You'll be among throngs of beggars, hawkers, tourists, near naked holy men, businesspeople snake charmers, children and scurrying monkeys. Amid the cacophony, some of the globe's most majestic and historical sights will emerge - Taj Mahal, the Ganga, the Himayalas."

After warning visitors on the many "contradictions" and "complications" of India, iExplore offers a happy conclusion: "Most travellers will find these difficulties well worth the rewards, however: India remains an incomparable travel experience.

Of particular note are the blue roof and rows of peacocks below the arched balconies. The haveli was once the residence of the Mohta family, ministers of Jaisalmer rulers.

Patwon-Ki-Haveli, It is the grandest mansion in Jaisalmer, not to be missed at all. This five haveli wonder has its ceiling supported by exquisitely carved pillars and its delicately chiselled balconies surely leave you mesmerised.

Nathmalji-Ki-Haveli, This haveli was carved by two brothers. One worked on right side and the other on left, but the harmony in design exists still. Screened windows, projected balconies and intricate carvings illustrate superb craftsmanship.

Jain Temples, Within the citadel are the splendorous Jain temples, dedicated to Rishabdevji, Sambhavnathji and Parshvanathji. The Parshvanathji Temple is the oldest and the most beautiful of the Jain temples. Human and animal figures are carved on the walls of its sanctum and the rising dome or 'shikhar' is crowned by an amalak and a waterpot containing a lotus flower. (TIMING 7 AM to 12 PM)

Nilgiri Railway chugs into world heritage list

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), which connects Mettupalayam (326 metres) to Udagamandalam (Ooty) (2,203 metres), is now a world heritage site for its outstanding contribution in keeping steam heritage tourism alive. This was decided by Unesco's world heritage committee in Durban on Friday evening. The Unesco inscription is an extension of the earlier nomination of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway as a heritage site. NMR, along with the Darjeeling rail, is now part of Unesco's Mountain Railways of India. Speaking to TOI from Durban, Indian Railways executive director of heritage, Rajesh Agrawal, said: "The decision is the culmination of extensive efforts made by us since 2002 to get NMR inscribed. This was the only entry whose nomination was unanimously supported by all the 20 member countries. UK especially highlighted the extraordinary industrial heritage values of the site. The decision followed a thunderous applause."

So far, India had 26 world heritage sites, both of cultural and natural value.

The Unesco committee said: "NMR is a unique example of construction genius employed by railway engineers in the 19th century. Before the railway, it took over 10 days to reach Ooty, braving insects and wild animals. Now, the 45 km journey takes only four hours." The committee added: "Various facets of the railway line, its rack and pinion mechanism to gain height, the steam engines, coaches, the station buildings preserved in their original shape, all bear testimony to the technological skills of the bygone era. NMR is also the best example of a colonial railway and part of that stage of globalisation, which was characterised by the political and economic domination of the people of Asia, Africa and the Pacific by Europeans."

NMR's construction was first proposed in 1854. Work began on the Madras-Coimbatore line in 1853 and the branch to Mettupalayam opened in 1873. In 1882, M Riggenbach, the Swiss inventor of Rigi rack railway, submitted a proposal for the construction of the railway line. This was accepted and the Nilgiri Rigi Railway Company Ltd was formed in 1885. The work was inaugurated in 1891 and finally completed in 1908. The railway was incorporated into Southern Railway in 1951.

Darjeeling - A Unique Hillstation

The former summer capital of Bengal, Darjeeling is picturesquely situated on the south-eastern flank of the Himalayas. Darjeeling is the most important and organised hill-resort in eastern India, lies 686 km from Kolkata. A UNIQUE TOY TRAIN : By the late 1800s, Darjeeling had gained in importance as a hill station but the only means of transportation of goods to and from the town was by bullock carts using the Hill Cart Road from Siliguri. An agent of the East Bengal Railway, Franklyn Prestage, came up with the plan for a narrow gauge rail link between Siliguri and Darjeeling. Construction started in 1879 and the first train pulled by the very 'gutsy' little steam-engine comprising three coaches puffed into Darjeeling on July 4, 1881. The trains nicknamed 'Toy Trains' of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway have been making daily journeys for over a century. Not quite the fastest means of reaching Darjeeling from the plains - the journey takes around 8 hours - the trip is more of an experience.

DARJEELING'S FAMOUS TEA : Tea-drinkers all over the world must be constantly blessing the memory of the person who decided around 1840 that the climate of the Darjeeling region was very conducive to the growth of tea. Pilgrimage to Sikh holy place Hemkund Sahib

In the Indian Himalayas, at the headwaters of the holy river Ganges, is the 'northern land' of sacred mountains and waters known as Uttarkhand. It is said that in Uttarkhand the landscape itself is imbued with sacred qualities; certainly the beauty of nature is interwoven with the spirit of pilgrimage.

Unique among the sacred places in Uttarkhand is a small lake, high above the tree line and surrounded by rocky peaks. On its bank, near a stream which leaves the lake then flows down to meet the Ganges, is a Sikh gurdwara. At an altitude of 4,329 metres, this is the highest temples in India. Sikhs know this place as Hemkunt. For eight months of the year this 'lake of ice' is inaccessible, its water frozen beneath deep snow. It is accessible for only four months of the year. Between June and October, when the monsoon rains begin, the ice and snow melt, and meadows of ferns and moss and wildflowers colour its banks. Then, in their thousands, Sikhs climb the steep stone path to the lake and bathe in its chill waters. They come in remembrance and prayer to see the place where their tenth Guru meditated and realized his oneness with God.

The famous the Valley of Flowers is also on the way to Hemkund Sahib.

Between June and October, visitors to Hemkunt and the Valley of Flowers travel from the plains into the hills by bus, by car, by truck, by scooter, by bicycle, even by foot. For the final two days of the journey, which is around 19 kms on the steep heights of mountains, is done on foot or mules ( a trekking zone also).

Pushkar, the holy town in Rajasthan is known for it's sacred lake and the only Brahma Temple in the world.
